IRCTC is going to monetised user data without data protection legislation

The RCTC specified in its tender that the consultant for this monetisation drive would need to iron out implementation issues due to potential privacy concerns regarding consumer data.
The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the ticket booking arm of the Indian Railways, is looking to monetise its bank of passenger data while doing business with private and government companies in a first-of-its-kind move.

The stated goal of this move is to generate revenue for the IRCTC in the range of INR 1000 crores. The consultant will be expected to research data from Indian Railways’ Passenger, Freight, and Parcel business applications, as well as any vendor-related data.

According to the tender, customer data to be studied includes, among other things, ‘Name, Age, Mobile No., Gender, Address, E-Mail ID, No. of Passenger, Class of Journey, Payment Mode, Login/Password,’ as well as behavioural data such as payment & booking mode, frequency of journey, and so on.
