In response to a court order in India, Telegram disclosed the names of administrators, phone numbers, and IP addresses of channels accused of copyright infringement
The app’s operator was forced to share the data after a teacher filed a lawsuit against the company for failing to do enough to prevent unauthorised distribution of her course material on the platform. The plaintiff teacher, Neetu Singh, claimed that a number of Telegram channels were reselling her study materials at reduced prices without her permission.
An Indian court had previously ordered Telegram to follow Indian law and disclose information about those operating such channels.
In cases where copyright infringement is alleged, litigants frequently reference the Neetu Singh versus TELEGRAM FZ LLC judgement as a precedent in order to demand disclosure of user information from encrypted apps.
